The LGBT community isn’t acknowledged in Zambia because the law doesn’t allow for its existence, so people who struggle with mental health issues often can’t find the care they need. Some grassroots organizations are working to help LGBT people, but they often operate in secret. To urge Zambia to repeal its anti-homosexuality law, Amnesty International recently told this story of a man serving a year prison sentence for being gay. Madalitso, a health professional, did nothing wrong, but is locked up. He is serving a year prison sentence with hard labour simply because he identifies as gay in a country that wants to dictate his identity.
